Sebastian Sternal, 39 Jahre jung, Professor an der Mainzer Musikhochschule, schwingt sich mit seinem ersten Soloalbum in die Riege der absoluten Top-Pianisten auf. 18 Stücke, alle unter fünf Minuten und mindestens eine Minute lang, fügen sich – man verzeihe mir das altmodische Wort – voller Anmut zu einem Album zusammen. Doch dieser Begriff passt exakt: Diese Musik bewegt sich mit einer angenehmen Mischung aus Zurückhaltung und Präsenz. Sie strahlt Würde uns Stärke aus, drängt sich niemals auf und ist dabei so dermaßen reizvoll, dass man sich ihr einfach nicht entziehen kann. Sternal ist ein Virtuose mit einer souveränen linken Hand, die oft mit eigenständiger Melodieführung kontrastreiche Dialoge mit der rechten führt. In diesen auch klangtechnisch wunderbar ausbalancierten Titeln schwingen die Einflüsse von Jazzgrößen wie Art Tatum, Keith Jarrett und Chick Corea mit, aber auch die der Impressionisten Maurice Ravel und Claude Debussy.
Keine Frage: Thelonia ist ein Meisterwerk.“

A dream, tone for tone.
Sebastian Sternal, 39 years young, professor at the Mainz Academy of Music, swings himself up into the ranks of the absolute top pianists with his first solo album. 18 pieces, all under five minutes and at least one minute long, fit together – forgive me the old-fashioned word – full of grace to an album. But this term fits exactly: this music moves with a pleasant mixture of restraint and presence. It radiates dignity and strength, never imposing itself, and yet it is so appealing that one simply cannot escape it. Sternal is a virtuoso with a sovereign left hand, which often conducts contrasting dialogues with the right with independent melodic guidance. The influences of jazz greats such as Art Tatum, Keith Jarrett and Chick Corea resonate in these titles, which are also wonderfully balanced in terms of sound, but also those of the impressionists Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy.
