Dmitri Schostakowitsch hat zeitlebens unter dem Stalinistischen System gelitten. Viele Nächte saß er auf gepackten Koffern, weil er nicht wusste, ob er vielleicht doch noch abgeholt und in eines der Lager verfrachtet würde. Schostakowitsch rang mit der Sinnlosigkeit von Gewalt. Seine 8. Sinfonie versteht er als Requiem für die Verluste auf allen Seiten. Bis zuletzt hat es der russische Komponist geschafft, seinem Protest musikalische Gestalt zu verleihen. Seine Achte ist ein bewegendes Zeugnis gegen Krieg, Hass und Hetze.
