Documentation of an opera composed by Alice Samter in Berlin-Spandau 2001
Synopsis
DIE NACHTWACHE - a chamber opera nightmare in 9 pictures
A world premiere recording from 2001
As early as 1965, the Berlin composer Alice Samter set the play "Nachtwache" by the Jewish writer Nelly Sachs to music. It was not until 2001 that the small Spandau Luther congregation dared to perform it. Nachtwache" is about atonement, about guilt, about perpetrators and victims and how to deal with them. That most terrible question, a core question of humanity, runs through the whole: why evil is needed to create the saint, the martyr. (Nelly Sachs).
