Synopsis
There it stands, the vulture. Majestically spreading its wings. Holding its position, it scours the open area. The other birds scrutinise their territory as well. Quo vadis, bird? Ulu Braun participated at Berlinale Shorts in 2013 with FORST. His latest film BIRDS looks at the life of birds in urban habitats. They apply their instinctive behaviour to the developed environment. What role do humans play therein? Bags and umbrellas become bushes, buildings become monoliths and people become organisms. The birds are forced to come to terms with a world that they are not responsible for.BIRDS offers a deep visual discovery of birds as creatures. The footage was gathered during the last few years whenever I was traveling. I was interested in how birds appear in urban and human spaces, how they orientate themselves within them. I aimed to empathize. From the beginning, I was surprised by how close the birds resemble dinosaurs and how they seem to maintain a prehistoric mindset and body. The rhythms through which they move their heads and turn their eyes, climatize their skin, and shake their feathers is still intense and mesmerizing to me. (Ulu Braun)
