Wolfgang Schwaninger begann seine Karriere als lyrischer Tenor am Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in München (Tamino, Belfiore, Belmonte, später auch Duca, Don Jose, Hoffmann und Canio) und erweiterte sein Repertoire dann ins deutsche Fach: Max (Dresden) Florestan (Leipzig und Tokyo), Bacchus (München, Wiesbaden, Darmstadt, Leipzig). Gastspiele führten den Tenor in viele Länder Europas, sowie nach Korea, Japan, USA und Canada und Israel. Wolfgang Schwaninger arbeitete mit namhaften Regisseuren wie August Everding, John Dew, Claus Guth, Hans Peter Lehmann, Loriot und Klaus Maria Brandauer sowie herausragenden Dirigenten unter anderem Herbert Blomstedt, Lawrence Foster, Gustav Kuhn und Constantinos Carydis.
Zahlreiche Rundfunkproduktionen und Konzerte beim SWR, MDR und beim Bayerischen Rundfunk. 2004 Nominierung zum Theaterpreis des Münchner Merkur. Im Sommer 2007 debütierte Wolfgang Schwaninger bei den Wagner-Festspielen Erl als Loge in »Das Rheingold«, im Oktober 2007 als Siegmund in der »Walküre« und im Frühjahr 2008 in der Titelpartie in Wagners »Tristan und Isolde« am Stadttheater in Münster. Im Oktober 2009 erfolgte das Debüt als Walther von Stolzing (»Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg«) am Theater in Hildesheim. Eine Nominierung zum Sänger des Jahres 2009 der Zeitschrift »Opernwelt« für die Produktionen »Hoffmanns Erzählungen« und »Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny«. 2010 war er an der koreanischen Uraufführung von Alban Bergs »Lulu« beteiligt. 2011 folgten weitere Gastspiele mit »Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny« in Istanbul, Tel Aviv und München. Außerdem gastierte er als Tristan in Augsburg. 2012 war er bei den Neuproduktionen »Peter Grimes« und »Oberon« in Münster beteiligt. 2013 sang er die Partie des Paul in Korngolds »Die tote Stadt« am Landestheater Innsbruck sowie des Siegmund in »Die Walküre« in Taipei/Taiwan. Ferner war er in der Rolle des Doctor in Dominick Argentos »The Voyage of Edgar Allan Poe« am Staatstheater Braunschweig zu sehen.
2014 sang er die Rollen Bacchus in Peking, Lohengrin in Rennes und Jimmy Mahoney in Innsbruck.
