Simon Keenlyside wurde in London geboren. Auf der Opernbühne debütierte er als Graf Almaviva / LE NOZZE DI FIGARO an der Staatsoper Hamburg. Mittlerweile ist er gerne gesehener Gast an allen großen Opernhäusern der Welt und hat eine besondere Beziehung zur Metropolitan Opera New York, dem Royal Opera House Covent Garden, der Bayerischen Staatsoper München und der Wiener Staatsoper, wo er u. a. Prospero / THE TEMPEST, Posa / DON CARLO, Giorgio Germont / LA TRAVIATA, Papageno / DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE, Golaud / PELLÉAS ET MÉLISANDE, Almaviva und die Titelrollen in DON GIOVANNI, EUGEN ONEGIN, WOZZECK, BILLY BUDD, HAMLET, MACBETH und RIGOLETTO sang.
2006 erhielt er den Olivier Award, 2007 den ECHO Klassik, 2011 wurde er mit dem Musical America’s Vocalist of the Year Award geehrt. Im Konzert war er u. a. mit dem Chamber Orchestra of Europe, dem City of Birmingham Orchestra, der London Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra und der Tschechischen Philharmonie sowie mit den Wiener und Berliner Philharmonikern zu hören. Auch mit Liedprogrammen war er sehr erfolgreich; auf CD erschienen Schumann Lieder sowie vier weitere CDs mit Schubert, Brahms, Strauss und zuletzt die „Songs of War“, wofür Keenlyside 2012 einen Gramophone Award erhielt. Ebenfalls auf CD erschienen Brittens „War Requiem“ mit dem London Symphony Orchestra unter Gianandrea Noseda, Mendelssohn Bartholdys „Elijah“ unter Paul McCreesh, „Des Knaben Wunderhorn“ unter Sir Simon Rattle, MACBETH unter Edward Gardner, DON GIOVANNI unter Claudio Abbado, „Carmina Burana“ unter Christian Thielemann, LA BOHÈME unter Riccardo Chailly, BILLY BUDD unter Richard Hickox, DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE unter Sir Charles Mackerras, LE NOZZE DI FIGARO unter René Jacobs (ausgezeichnet mit einem Grammy Award) und Adès’ THE TEMPEST (Grammy Awards 2014 und Music DVD Recording of the Year beim ECHO Klassik 2014).
Simon Keenlysides jüngste Engagements umfassten u. a. Don Giovanni an der Metropolitan Opera, der Wiener Staatsoper und in Bilbao, Graf Almaviva an der Mailänder Scala sowie Macbeth und Golaud an der Wiener Staatsoper. Auf dem Konzertpodium wird er Adès’ „Totentanz“ mit dem Los Angeles Philharmonic und dem RTE National Symphony Orchestra unter der Leitung des Komponisten aufführen. Neben Liederabenden in Barcelona und London wird er in Prag und München auch mit seinem Jazz Programm „Blue skies – Songlines to American Music“ auftreten.
