Koen Schoots wurde in den Niederlanden geboren und studierte an der Musikhochschule von Maastricht Dirigieren, Klavier und Gesang. 1984 begann er im österreichischen Klagenfurt als Korrepetitor und avancierte innerhalb von vier Jahren zum Ersten Kapellmeister. 1989 wechselte er als Erster Kapellmeister nach Gelsenkirchen. Von 1992 bis 2002 widmete er sich hauptsächlich dem unterhaltenden Musiktheater indem er u. a. in Hamburg »Cats«, in Bremen und Köln »Jekyll & Hyde« und am Friedrichstadtpalast Berlin dirigierte. Seit Beginn der Spielzeit 2003/04 ist er als fester Dirigent an der Deutschen Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf/Duisburg engagiert und konzentriert sich wieder mehr auf das klassische Repertoire. Er dirigierte in Düsseldorf »Tosca« und »Macbeth« sowie die Ballettabende »Coppelia« und »Der holzgeschnitzte Prinz«. Neben seinem Engagements in Düsseldorf gastiert er regelmäßig: »Sweeney Todd« an der Komischen Oper Berlin, »Die Zauberflöte«, »Carmen« und »Aida« bei den Opernfestspielen St. Margarethen (Österreich), Frank Wildhorns »The Scarlet Pimpernel« am Opernhaus Halle und dessen neuestes Musical »Dracula« am Theater St. Gallen, die Fantasy Oper »Gormenghast« von Irmin Schmidt in Luxemburg und Lille und das neue tschechische Musical »Romeo und Julia« in Saarbrücken. Seine künftige Engagements umfassen u. a. die Uraufführung von »The Day Before« in Philadelphia, »Der Freischütz« bei den Sommerfestspielen Saar, »Les Misérables« im Theater St. Gallen, »Nabucco« und »La Traviata« bei den Opernfestspielen St. Margarethen und »Die Jüdin von Toledo« an der Deutschen Oper am Rhein.
Seit der Spielzeit 2007/08 übernimmt er an der Komischen Oper Berlin die musikalische Leitung von »Kiss me, Kate«.

In 1989 he continued his career as first capellmeister in Gelsenkirchen. From 1992 to 2002 he devoted himself mainly to the entertaining music theatre and conducted, amongst others, »Cats« in Hamburg, in Bremen and Cologne »Jekyll & Hyde« and as well for the Friedrichstadtpalast Berlin. With the beginning of the season 2003/04, he is permanently engaged by the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf/Duisburg and is more focusing on the classic repertoire. He conducts in Düsseldorf »Tosca« and »Macbeth« as well as the ballets »Coppelia« and »Der holzgeschnitzte Prinz«. Apart from his engagement in Düsseldorf he is a regular guest with »Sweeney Todd« at the Komische Oper Berlin. Further guest engagements include »The Magic Flute«, »Carmen« and »Aida« for the St. Margarethen Opera Festival (Austria), Frank Wildhorn's »The Scarlet Pimpernel« for the Opernhaus Halle and his most recent musical »Dracula« for the St. Gallen Theatre, the fantasy opera »Gormenghast« by Irmin Schmidt in Luxemburg and Lille and the new Czech musical »Romeo and Julia« in Saarbrücken.
