Joel Allison hat in Toronto und Ottawa studiert. Als frischgebackener Absolvent des Elite Canadian Opera Company Ensemble Studio wurde Joel Allison 2019 mit dem zweiten Platz im Christina- und Louis-Quilico-Wettbewerb ausgezeichnet und war Halbfinalist bei den Auditions 2020 des Metropolitan Opera National Council. Joel Allison wurde auch für den jährlichen CBC-Wettbewerb „30 Hot Canadian classical musicians under 30“ im Jahr 2020 nominiert. In der Saison 2020/21 war Joel Allison Stipendiat des Förderkreises der Deutschen Oper Berlin und gehört seit der Saison 2021/22 dem Ensemble der Deutschen Oper Berlin an.
In der Saison 2019/20 sang Joel Allison den Mandarin in TURANDOT und Fiorillo in IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA. Für die Canadian Opera Company (COC) übernahm er die Partie des Vaters in HÄNSEL UND GRETEL, des Jägers in RUSALKA und des Königs in AIDA. Kürzlich spielte er Don Basilio in IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA mit der Saskatoon Opera, Leporello in DON GIOVANNI mit dem Music Niagara und dem Westben Arts Festival sowie Dr. Roland Angeler in Marius Felix Langes DER GESANG DER ZAUBERINSEL bei den Salzburger Festspielen.
Zu den Höhepunkten der letzten Spielzeiten gehören die Debüts mit der Canadian Opera Company als Saretzki in EUGEN ONEGIN, als Superior Senator in der Weltpremiere von Rufus Wainwrights HADRIAN und als Schaunard in LA BOHÈME.
Als gefragter Konzertsolist ist Joel Allison in ganz Kanada mit Ensembles wie dem National Arts Centre Orchestra, Thirteen Strings, Theatre of Early Music, Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra und dem Orchestre Classique de Montréal aufgetreten. Vor kurzem trat er beim Toronto Bach Festival, dem Tilford Bach Festival und dem Festival international de musique baroque de Lamèque auf und sang Werke von Bach, Mozart und Purcell. Außerdem sang er Händels „Messiah“ mit dem Chorus Niagara, der Neufundländer Symphonie und dem Orchestre Classique de Montréal.
Joel Allison debütierte im Alter von zwölf Jahren als Solist in Howard Shores „Herr der Ringe“-Symphonie mit dem Orchester des National Arts Centre unter der Leitung von Alexander Mickelthwate.
