Der junge amerikanische Tenor David Portillo gilt als eines der großen Talente im lyrischen Fach und kann bereits jetzt auf eine nicht unbeachtliche Karriere auf beiden Seiten des Atlantiks blicken, und dies sowohl auf der Opernbühne wie auch auf dem Konzertpodium.
Nachdem er an der Wiener Staatsoper als Conte Almaviva / DER BARBIER VON SEVILLA debütiert hatte, gastierte er erstmals beim Festival d’Aix-en-Provence als Lurcanio / ARIODANTE sowie bei den Salzburger Festspiele in einer konzertanten Aufführung von LA FAVORITE an der Seite von Elina Garanca und Juan Diego Flórez.
In den USA gab er seinen Einstand an der Lyric Opera of Chicago als David / DIE MEISTERSINGER VON NÜRNBERG und sang daraufhin u. a. in Chicago Andres / WOZZECK unter Stabführung von Sir Andrew Davis, an der Houston Grand Opera Tamino / DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE sowie an der Washington National Opera Ramiro / LA CENERENTOLA. An der Metropolitan Opera gab er in der vergangenen Saison Conte Almaviva und kehrte dorthin als Jacquino / FIDELIO unter Leitung von Sebastian Weigle zurück.
Es folgte seine Rückkehr ans Festival von Aix-en-Provence als Pedrillo in Martin Kusejs DIE ENTFÜHRUNG AUS DEM SERAIL, ebendiese Partie sang er daraufhin auch am Théâtre de Champs-Elysées und an De Nationale Opera. An der Oper Frankfurt gab er Tamino, beim Saito Kinen Festival Gonzalvo / L'HEURE ESPAGNOLE sowie Ferdinand / THE TEMPEST an der Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rom unter Leitung von Thomas Adès.
Die Saison 2017/2018 führt ihn u. a. als Eduardo / THE EXTERMINATING ANGEL und Camille de Rosillon / DIE LUSTIGE WITWE an die Metropolitan Opera, als Conte Almaviva / DER BARBIER VON SEVILLA an die Houston Grand Opera, als Pasquale / ORLANDO PALADINO zu den Münchner Opernfestspielen und als Conte di Libenskof gibt er sein Debüt an der Deutschen Oper Berlin in der Neuproduktion von IL VIAGGIO A REIMS.
Auf dem Konzertpodium gastierte er mit dem Radio Filharmonisch Orkest in Schumanns „Das Paradies und die Peri“ unter Leitung von Markus Stenz und nahm an einer großen Konzert-Tournee von ARIODANTE an der Seite von Joyce DiDonato teil.
David Portillo studierte am Ryan Opera Center und war Teilnehmer sowohl des Merola Opera Programs wie auch der Wolf Trap Opera in Washington, D.C.
