Die Berlinerin studierte u.a. am Conservatorio di musica Giuseppe Verdi in Mailand und an der Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rom und erhielt wichtige künstlerische Einflüsse von Renata Scotto, Aris Argiris und Kammersängerin Deborah Polaski.
2016 debütierte Alexandra Ionis an der Seite von Ricarda Merbeth und Laura Aikin in Strauss‘ DIE ÄGYPTISCHE HELENA an der Deutschen Oper Berlin unter der musikalischen Leitung von Andrew Litton und in der Regie von Marco Arturo Marelli. Ein weiteres wichtiges Opernprojekt folgte an der Universität der Künste Berlin in Aribert Reimanns‘ Oper MELUSINE (Pythia) unter Errico Fresis und Frank Hilbrich.
Die junge Künstlerin verfügt über ein sehr vielseitiges Repertoire, das sich von der Frühklassik bis zur Moderne spannt. Zu ihren Opernengagements zählen Roßweiße / DIE WALKÜRE in Bari unter Stefan Anton Reck und in Neapel unter Juraj Valcuha, DEATH IN VENICE unter Sir Donald Runnicles, IL VIAGGIO A REIMS und IL TROVATORE, jeweils unter Giacomo Sagripanti, an der Deutschen Oper Berlin, Widmanns BABYLON, Reimanns GESPENSTERSONATE, die Uraufführung von Eötvös‘ SLEEPLESS, dirigiert vom Komponisten selbst, und Annina / DER ROSENKAVALIER unter Simone Young an der Staatsoper Unter den Linden, IL VIAGGIO A REIMS an der Semperoper, Margret / WOZZECK in Valencia unter James Gaffigan, Annina / DER ROSENKAVALIER, Marcellina / LE NOZZE DI FIGARO und Ulrica / UN BALLO IN MASCHERA unter Guillermo García Calvo in Chemnitz sowie mehrere Partien in DIE SCHNEEKÖNIGIN an der Tischlerei der Deutschen Oper Berlin mit wiederholten Wiederaufnahmen.
Zuletzt war sie in einem szenischen Projekt mit Musik von Bernd Alois Zimmermann (Regie: Calixto Bieito) mit dem Gürzenich-Orchester unter der Leitung von Francois-Xavier Roth in der Philharmonie Köln und der Elbphilharmonie Hamburg zu hören.
Momentan steht Ionis als Schwertleite in der Neuproduktion des RING, in DIE WALKÜRE, an der Staatsoper Unter den Linden auf der Bühne, inszeniert von Dmitri Tcherniakov und unter der musikalischen Leitung von Christian Thielemann und Thomas Guggeis.
Ihr Konzertrepertoire beinhaltet Werke von Schostakowitsch, Ravel, Tschaikowskij, Prokofjew, Rachmaninow, Rossini, Verdi und Mahler.
Seit 2018 ist Alexandra Ionis Stipendiatin des Richard-Wagner-Verbandes.
