Als Gründungsmitglied einer der ersten freien Theatergruppen, der „Theaterwehr Brandheide“, arbeitet sie bis 1983 jenseits des etablierten Theaterbetriebs. Verschiedene Engagements führten sie anschließend nach Hannover, Hamburg, Berlin, Göttingen, Essen und Bielefeld. Sie arbeitete u. a. mit F. K. Waechter, Andreas Kriegenburg, Jette Steckel, Jorinde Dröse und Stephan Kimmig zusammen. Von 1993 bis 2000 war Verena Reichhardt am Schauspiel Hannover, von 2001 bis 2009 am Thalia Theater Hamburg und von 2011 bis 2012 am Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus engagiert. In der Spielzeit 2023/24 ist sie am Schauspiel Hannover in der Wiederaufnahme von Das letzte Feuer sowie in Lilja Rupprechts Inszenierung von Der kleine Prinz zu sehen.
