Olivier Py, geboren in Grasse, studierte zunächst Theologie und Philosophie und später am Conservatoire national supérieur dʼart dramatique in Paris. Er arbeitete als Schauspieler und Dramatiker sowie als Regisseur. 2005 erschien sein Roman „Paradies der Traurigkeit“.

Nach seiner Tätigkeit als Direktor des Centre Dramatique National dʼOrléans wurde er 2007 Direktor des Théâtre de lʼOdéon in Paris. Py, seit 2013 Leiter des Festivals von Avignon, gehört zu den wenigen Regisseuren, die international sowohl im Schauspiel wie in der Oper erfolgreich sind. Seine Produktion von Meyerbeers DIE HUGENOTTEN am Théatre La Monnaie Brüssel wurde 2011 von der Opernwelt zur Aufführung des Jahres gewählt. An der Deutschen Oper Berlin inszenierte er nun im Rahmen des Meyerbeer-Zyklus' LE PROPHETE und nun, in der Saison 2021/22 die Neuproduktion von Verdis LES VÊPRES SICILIENNES.
Als Opernregisseur erhielt er darüber hinaus Einladungen ans Grand Théâtre de Genève, an die Opéra National de Paris, ans Gran Teatro del Liceu Barcelona, ans Theater an der Wien sowie zu den Festivals in Edinburgh und Avignon. Sein Stück DIE SONNE wurde 2011 von ihm an der Volksbühne Berlin uraufgeführt. 2012 realisierte er mit DIE MACHT DES SCHICKSALS in Köln seine erste Opernproduktion in Deutschland, an der Bayerischen Staatsoper folgte IL TROVATORE.
