The outstanding Elbphilharmonie Ensemble in Residence joins forces with an unusual soloist on an instrument only rarely used in classical music. The work they perform together is »Nachtgebete« (Night Prayers) by Georgian composer Giya Kantscheli.Giya Kancheli has been living in Belgium since 1996, but he has close bonds with his native Georgia to this day. Prayers are no rarity in his work – quietness is very much Kancheli’s element. German weekly Die Zeit wrote about the »underlying mood of mourning« in his music, adding: »Anyone seeking true self-reflection will find it in the late Kancheli«.Kancheli originally dedicated his composition to Jan Garbarek, and at the Elbphilharmonie award-winning saxophonist Asya Fateyeva plays the solo part. In 2014 Fateyeva became the first woman to reach the finale of the prestigious Adolphe Sax Competition in Belgium, and two years later she was awarded an Echo Klassik prize.
