Based on a series of Interviews with Damian Pettigrew on the theme of the artist and creation a year before Fellini's death - "the longest and most detailed conversation ever recorded on my personal vision" according to Fellini - this entertaining, unique portrait explores the mythical director's world. From Federico's childhood to his last film, Damian Pettigrew traces the master's career, thoughts, and contradictions as told to him by Fellini himself, his friends, actors, and technicians. A fascinating voyage of discovery punctuated by film excerpts and astonishing previously unseen private archive footage: scenes from his films which were left on the cutting room floor, previously unreleased scenes of the film shoots, private 8 mm. archives, and excerpts of recently restored films.
After reading English and Italian literature at Corpus Christi (Oxford), he began his career as a journalist then directed documentary portraits of Eugene Ionesco, Italo Calvino, Alberto Moravia, Severo Sarduy and Jean Giraud. A long-time friend of Samuel Beckett, he worked in close collaboration with the playwright on a remake of FILM (1963) with Jack Lemmon and Vittorio Gassman. In 1992, he produced and directed the last major interviews with Federico Fellini.
