Synopsis
Petra Nachtmanowa travels to the end of the world and at the same time into her heart. With her Saz on her back, the Berlin musician sets out in search of the origin of the mythical string instrument.
She travels from Berlin to Istanbul, across Anatolia, over the snow-capped peaks of the Caucasus to the dusty deserts of eastern Iran. She meets Bosnian instrument makers, music teachers who climb mountains in shirts and suits, and chain-smoking Persians who may have invented blues rock. Everyone asks them one thing: "Play me a song that I can take home with me."
"Saz" is a film about the power of music and the vastness of the world, road movie and search for meaning at the same time, a breathtaking trip to the border region between Europe and Asia that shows that despite conflicts and crises there is something out there that holds us all together.
It is the journey of her life: with the Saz on her back, the musician Petra Nachtmanowa sets off in search of the origin of the mythical string instrument - from Berlin to the Balkans, Anatolia and the Caucasus to Iran.
Everywhere she meets people for whom the Saz is a piece of soul: Bosnian instrument makers, Georgian wedding singers and an old Persian who sings about love on a mountain at the end of the world. Petra plays with them and asks them for a song to take home with her. At first she awakens incredulous amazement. Then enthusiasm. And finally deep trust.
"Saz" tells of the common and separating, of men who have passed their craft on to their sons for generations, of Anatolian farm girls who become famous musicians, of the sound of the wild East, endless country roads, lost villages, intoxicating festivals and lonely artists. It is a film about the incredible power of music and about what holds the world together, despite differences. A trip through vast landscapes and pulsating metropolises, full of smoky tea houses and snow-capped peaks. A poetic road movie, raw and touching at the same time.
